Pair Russian Tazze Attributed to the Imperial Lapidary Workshops Circa 1860s

About the Item

Our extraordinary pair of tazza are attributed to the golden age of the Imperial Lapidary Factory at Ekaterinburg, circa 1860s. Exceptionally sculpted from exotic Kalkan jasper and Orletz rhodonite, a superior grade of rhodonite admired for its saturated hues that was discovered in the Urals in the 1780s. A design for an almost identical tazza on stand can be found in the Imperial State Archives as shown in our image here. For a similar design, see the exhibition catalogue of J. Kugel's sale, Trésors des Tzars, in Paris, 1998. Objects of this quality were revered among wealthy Europeans who completed the so-called Northern Grand Tour and would see items of dazzling quality at the Hermitage and other great aristocratic palaces and museums.
