About the Item

A fine vintage Winchcombe press-molded baking dish decorated with trailed slip designs attributable to Michael Cardew (British, 1901-1983) and probably made around 1935. The dish is of rectangular shape with a raised rim and is made in local red clay with a crimped (pie-crust) rim. While the outer body is unglazed the inner dish is decorated with a brown snake like and linear dark brown slip patterning against a lighter honey glazed ground. The dish has an impressed Winchcombe mark to the base however no makers mark. Ray Finch having joined Winchcombe in 1936 continued to produce similar designs. The dish bears a pencilled price mark of 15/- (15 Shillings). We have a second similar dish from the same estate. Provenance: acquired in the British Art Market In good condition with a couple of surface bubble firing bursts to the base.
