1864 Antique Russian Silver Trinket Box

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Russian silver box; an addition to our Russian silverware collection. This exceptional antique Russian silver filigree trinket box/casket has been realistically modelled in the form of a chest. The surface of this silver box is embellished with fine and impressive scrolling filigree decoration displayed within elongated lobed designs. The domed hinged cover is ornamented with further filigree decoration in addition to trellis style border to the rim. The cover is surmounted with an impressive central filigree decorated floral finial accented with a plain ball motif. The cover secures with a shaped hinged clasp to a looped receiver attached to the body; the clasp is secured with the original security peg, conjoined to the cover with a silver chain. This impressive Russian casket is supported by four lobed filigree feet, reflecting the design to that of the finial. The hallmarks to the rim of this trinket box/casket include: Assay mark: BC, 1864 (Moscow, Russia) Silver quality/purity mark: 88 (88 zolotniks) Maker's mark: ?? (untraced) This assayer could be either Viktor Vasilyevich Savinsky or Veniamin Vasilyevich Savinsky 84 zolotniki is the common purity of silver used for Russian silverware and 88 zolonik was used on higher quality work; this is equivalent to 916/1000 or .916 standard silver Condition This antique filigree trinket box is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition, in keeping with age and type. The filigree decoration is very sharp. The Russian hallmarks struck to the surface of the rim are all very clear. Dimensions: Length 5cm/2" Width including catch 4.8cm/1.9" Height 4.7cm/1.9".
