About the Item

A beautiful 'as is' late 18th or early 19th century example of 'Marqueterie de Paille', or straw marquetry, work box. The top inlaid with a wonderful cityscape, with early architecture and what appears to be a tower under construction. The interior retaining the vibrant original coloring, showing an interesting building with three spires flanked by two panels of crossed flutes? These all lift up to reveal small drawers the central panel has a cool checkerboard floor. There are two needle cushions. Every surface decorated with exquisite and colorful inlay. Rough condition, but still retaining lots of charm. Priced accordingly. Old Christie's tag on the bottom, great provenance. Provenance: The Collections of Principessa Ismene Chigi Della Rovere. The technique is close to wood marquetry. In the 17th century clergymen, sailors and convicts practiced it, and it gave birth to a very rich handicraft especially in France. The straw used is rye straw cultivated and harvested in Burgundy. The straw is dried and dyed then opened and flattened in the workshop. It has a natural silica polish that makes it impermeable and resistant.
