19th Century Burr Amboyna Glove Box by Paul Sormani, 114 Rue du Temple, Paris

About the Item

A fine Napoleon III burled amboyna wood glove box with rounded walnut edges and mounted with incised pewter straps with fleur-de-lis terminals, the corners with conforming mounts and the lid centered with a metal inlay repeating the fleur-de-lis motif. A rectangular escutcheon on the front surrounds the keyhole (key present). The top of the lock plate in engraved "P. Sormani, 114 Rue du Temple, Paris" Paul Sormani established his shop in 1847 at 7, Saint Nicolas cemetery, then in 1854 at 114, rue du Temple and finally in 1867 at 10, rue Charlot in Paris. Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, made the success of the house by decorating its palaces with the creations of Paul Sormani. Sormani was at 114 Rue du Temple from 1854-1867 placing this piece in that period.
