About the Item

A 19th Century Meissen Porcelain Ormolu Mounted Hinged Box with Watteau Scene Cartouche and the Interior Decorated with Floral Designs. The box features an ormolu-mounted structure with elaborate Rococo-style ornamentation. The exterior is decorated with hand-painted cartouches framed by raised scrollwork in pastel green, pink, and gilt, enhancing the overall baroque aesthetic. The central medallion on the lid presents a finely painted Watteau-style pastoral scene, depicting a courting couple in a natural landscape, rendered in soft, atmospheric colors reminiscent of 18th-century French fête galante paintings. Surrounding this vignette, the undulating gilt-bordered panels display relief-molded detailing that accentuates the box’s three-dimensional quality. The sides of the box continue the decorative scheme, featuring floral reserves framed within sculptural, asymmetrical scrollwork, each containing meticulously painted bouquets in vibrant hues of pink, blue, orange, and yellow. The domed lid and body are outlined with delicate gilding, emphasizing the elaborate contours of the piece. The interior is equally decorated, with the inner lid adorned with a lush floral spray, while the inner base and sides carry complementary floral arrangements, demonstrating Meissen’s mastery in polychrome enamel decoration. Meissen porcelain, established in the early 1700s in Saxony, was the first European manufactory to produce true hard-paste porcelain, breaking the monopoly of Chinese and Japanese imports. Under the direction of Johann Gregor Höroldt and later artists, Meissen became renowned for its richly painted designs, including chinoiserie, mythological subjects, and elaborate floral compositions. By the 19th century, the manufactory had continued this tradition, producing highly decorative and finely executed pieces such as this porcelain box, which reflects the enduring influence of Rococo revival aesthetics and the technical excellence for which Meissen is celebrated.
