English Victorian Oak Deskbox with Original Watercolor Portraits by R. Simkin

About the Item

English Victorian oak deskbox with two doors that open to reveal a letter rack file, with fitted drawer for pens and inks below. There is a universal paper calendar in its holder above the two hinged doors. The doors of this slant front box have original watercolors behind glass of the Prince Consorts own Rifle Brigade (White Sash), signed William Simkin. William SImkin (1850-1926) was employed by the war office to design recruiting posters and to illustrate the army and navy gazette. He produced striking watercolors of soldiers in their regimental uniforms and also the campaigns of British soldiers. In addition he illustrated several publications. His work is well regarded and collected on both sides of the Atlantic. There is some foxing on the paper. Circa 1900.
