About the Item

Once owned by Leon Boissier Palun (1916-2007), former Senegalese ambassador to London and Paris, this mid nineteenth century French Napoleon III period palisander game box features a tortoise shell inlaid lid with intricately scrolling bronze inlay detailing. A central cartouche with monogram BLP finishes the lid. Inside, five removable palisander trays contain eighty-six round mother-of-pearl chips, twenty-three shorter rectangular mother-of-pearl chips, and forty-two longer rectangular bone chips detailed with inset blue borders. The gambling chips in different sizes represented different monetary values. An exquisite collector's piece, circa 1860.
