One angel plays a lyre and the other an aulos or double flute, flanked by impressive torcheres bearing pine cones and surrounded by a wide border of olive leaves and olive fruit. The interior of cover decorated with a highly artistic pair of Bacchus masks flanking a grapevine garland, signed on upper right corner E. F. Caldwell & Co. Inc New York. This is a good and complete English handmade wood "weighted" chess set game of 32 pieces, in its original box with a sliding lid, made by John Jaques of London and dating to the mid 20th century period.
The chess pieces are made of turned and carved varnished wood. The bases of ALL pieces are weighted with metal pieces and the bases have a green felt/paper cover.
Weighted sets like this one have a much nicer "feel" when playing.
The pieces in the set are in the Staunton style.
Sizes: Kings: 70mm ( ~ 2.75 inches); Pawns: ~45mm (~1.7 inches)
The set comes complete with its original wood storage box, having a sliding lid and complete with a paper makers sticker to the lid.

The presented and chosen motifs reflect the spirit of the time, Jugendstil. The offered antique caskets come with their rare original keys, normally lost over the years, here the keys with pierce work Erhard & Sohne lion logo and additional E.S.. The original locking mechanism is working properly. They are each 10 cm / 3.94 inches wide, 4,5 cm / 1.77 inches tall and 7 cm / 2.76 inches deep and stay in very good to excellent original condition with a nice and warm patina, minor typical and characteristic wear consistent with age and use. The high-end antique Jugendstil boxes or caskets show superior craftsmanship and design elements by the renowned designers, Erhard & Sohne, established in 1844 in Germany. The famous German company was granted the world patent for the manufacture of brass inlay in 1904.
