Schlevogt Hoffmann "Ingrid" Lapis Marbled Glass Lidded Box with Ormolu Mounts
About the Item
This rare Art Deco era hinged glass dresser box was made in Czechoslovakia and is part of the Ingrid series, named for the daughter of Henry Günther Schlevogt of the Curt Schlevogt glass manufactory and Charlotte Hoffman Schlevogt of the Heinrich Hoffmann glass manufactory. Schlevogt's Ingrid line was intended to be on par with the quality of carved stone sculpture and was designed in conjunction with artists associated with the leading design houses of the day including Wiener Werkstätte, Moser and J. & L. Lobmeyr.
The lid of this Ingrid hinged dresser box is composed of pressed glass in a marbled blue color made to mimic the appearance of lapis lazuli, and has been hand finished. The piece features a stylized scene in deep relief with Classic Art Deco elements and depicts a semi-nude woman reaching towards a Borzoi. The dog stands beside a large potted flowering plant with a curvilinear stem. The base of the piece is made of black glass which provides a strong visual contrast to the color of the lid. The box is fitted with ornate filigree ormolu mounts.
The underside of the box bears the acid etched Ingrid signature mark along with the words Czecho-Slovakia and Made Exclusively for Paris Decorators. Founded in 1911, the now defunct Paris Decorators firm was a New York based distributor of high end French art glass and home furnishings.
This exquisite box would be a wonderful addition to a collection of Fine Czech art glass or works equally well displayed on its own.
