Coromandel: also known as Makassar Ebony, is a member of the genus Diospyros and one of the plants commonly known as ebony. Coromandel ebony wood is variegated, streaky brown and black, nearly always wide striped. It is considered a highly valuable wood for turnery, fine cabinet work and joinery.
The tree grows up to 20 meters under favourable circumstances, although such trees are rarely seen nowadays. Since Coromandel ebony has been a woodworker's favorite for centuries, most of it has been felled and used in high quality furniture. Antique Silver Gilt Vanity Box veneered in stunning Amboyna.
From our Vanity boxes, we are delighted to offer this stunning Amboyna veneered vanity box. The box with quadrant brass edging and matching escutcheon surrounding the Amboyna veneered exterior with side flush mounted recessed handles. The box is labelled with "Joseph Rodgers & Sons" of Sheffield, cutler to her Majesty" with exquisitely engraved silver-gilt lids upon glass bottles by London Silversmith, Thomas Johnson. The lock plate is stamped with the registration number and makers mark Chubb & Son, locksmiths to her majesty.
The lid features a fold-down letter compartment with a removable mirror behind it. The base has a fabulous assortment of thirteen superb-cut glass bottles with exquisitely engraved sterling silver gilt & pierced jars. Unusually, the back five jars rise when the box is opened, a rare and desirable addition to this vanity box. The front features two drawers, one is vacant while the other is for storing jewellery; containing a removable accoutrements pad with various tools.
This silver-gilt vanity box comes with a fully working lock and tasselled key.
Joseph Rodgers & Sons was founded in 1724 when John Rodgers first rented the star and Maltese cross mark from the Cutlers’ Company. The Tea Caddy modelled in the form of a coopered barrel complete with two thick brass straps around a beautifully patinated body with a mahogany plinth having a cavetto edge. The lid with a matching cavetto edge having a beautiful star inlay motif surmounted by a turned finial in the shape of an acorn. The front of the caddy is beautifully inlaid in Ebony with the word Tea in a 3d effect. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver combination vinaigrette / thread holder has been realistically modeled in the form of a carriage lamp.
The body of the vessel is embellished with impressive chased scrolling leaf decoration, accented with plain silver borders.
The anterior surface of the antique silver holder bears a feature bezel set cabochon cut rock crystal panel, displaying the initials MAUD; this protruding panel replicates the location of the lamp's light.
The posterior of the vessel features an impressive hallmarked plain belt loop/hook fastening.
The piece retains the original domed hinged cover ornamented with tiered panels embellished with further scrolling leaf decoration.
The cover is surmounted with a plain ring loop attachment and opens to reveal the original thread spool.
The underside of the lamp is fitted with a hallmarked hinged cover, which opens to reveal the vinaigrette with the original push fit grille and gilding.
The grille is ornamented with an engraved and pierced decorated floral rosette design.
The interior of the antique vinaigrette cover bears a Victorian lozenge mark which certifies the patent of the design on 8th September 1869 with the UK Patent Office.
