About the Item

French snuff round box in gold. Beautiful round snuff box, crafted in Paris France during the transition of the first Republic and the first empire periods, between the 1798 and 1808. This round snuff box was carefully crafted in the neoclassical Louis XVI style in solid yellow gold of 18 karats and embellished with intricate chiseled, engraved and guilloche finishes. Weight: 25.3 Grams, (16.21 Dwt). Measurements: Diameter 40 mm (1.57 Inches) Height 13.5 mm (0.53 Inch) Hallmarks: Stamped three times, with ancient French marks; the portrait bearded head mark inside an oval cartouche with 85 for the assay and warranty of the 750 finesse, the maker's maitre EPR with a phrygian cap inside a lozange cartouche and a Chicken with the number 3 inside a oval cartouche for the standard or title. Note: The gold assay warranty marks depicted in this box of the chicken with the 3, was in use only between the 1798 and 1809. Note: Snuff boxes were used for containing snuff, a mixture of ground tobacco and scented oils, and were very popular in the 18th century when snuff-taking was fashionable. Highly decorated and valuable objects, they became collectors' items in the 19th century. Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry pouch. Condition: The overall condition of this snuff box is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold, no dents or restorations visible.
