About the Item

This rare pair of Russian folk art treen tobacco containers are beautifully hand turned from one solid piece of limewood. They have well hollowed interiors with a neatly fitting lid with a central knob for lifting. The exterior of these decorative pieces is very finely hand carved with different snow covered landscape with horse drawn sledges. One with a single horse slowly making its way home with a seated man with winter provisions, and the other racing through the snow, pulled by three horses with two passengers on board. The carved landscapes and figures are very nicely hand painted in polychrome colours. The containers date to the late 19th century and have been well used and display some age related losses to the original paint and minor chips and knocks, which, combined with the rich waxed polish patination, gives these interesting pieces a very tactile appeal and a good country house look. Russian, circa 1890
