About the Item
Pastoral box. Carved antler, wood, metal. Spanish school, 1861.

Oval box made of antler carved in its color, with wood on the lid to reinforce it, decorated on the outside with a series of engraved elements. An animal or monster appears at the base, on the lid a monstrance or monstrance with a cross in the center and a large base with geometric elements, surrounded by angular shapes acting as a frame. Under the antler hinge is the date of creation of the piece (1861) and, between two bands of angular elements, an inscription (soy de francys / inverted d / a rhombus / poios), alluding to the owner (and possibly craftsman) of the work. This type of boxes, of popular tradition, were common in ancient times and were usually made by shepherds or ranchers themselves to store snuff or tobacco. ·
