About the Item

A most impressive and highly decorative French large size double tea caddy made in tightly grained rich oak. The rectangular box stands on circular shaped brass feet with brass beaded decoration. The front of the box is serpentine and finished at each end with a canted corner. This ornate box is decorated with applied brass beading and fine copper mounts throughout. On the front is a central cherub escutcheon plate, and to each side stands a classical figure of a young woman. The canted corners are also copper mounted with female figureheads and flowers. The sides of the tea caddy are further mounted with ornate copper panels with two cherubs amongst foliage holding an oval portrait of a pretty young lady. The lid has a moulded edge with two rows of brass beading. At the corners, there are further copper mounts with clusters of flowers. The top has a large, fabulous copper mount with entwined branches, two dogs, and a fox. The lid opens on stop hinges to reveal a fitted interior with two compartments for different teas. Each is enclosed with a lid which has a turned ebony knob for lifting. The box retains its original brass lock, which bears the signature of this prestigious French maker, Tahan of Paris. The lock appears to be in good condition. It is in the open position, but there is no key. A lovely, rare French signed tea caddy in wonderful original condition with a rich colour and patina. French circa 1880
