About the Item

A Very Good Quality 18th century, Georgian Mahogany Rectangular Tea Caddy, Having Original Brass Handle To Hinged Top, Enclosing Divisions, With Unusual Glazed Panels To Front Bearing The Name "Mary Hodgson", Flanked By Canted Corners With Quarter Turned Columns. This relatively typical 18th century, chippendale period, mahogany tea caddy is constructed from good, rich, mahogany timber which retains a nice untouched colour and patina. As mentioned above the tea caddy also retains original brasswear and remains in good functional condition. Very unusually indeed the tea caddy has two circular glazed panels to the front, which have the nae Mary Hodgson in them. We would presume that Mary Hodgson was the original owner of this tea caddy and that it was perhaps purchased and commissioned for her as a present from somebody held dear. Tea was an extremely valuable commodity throughout the course of the 18th and 19th centuries. Therefore of course something was required to store the precious tea leaves in and ensure that they remain in their peak condition for as long as possible, whilst at the same time offering a little security to stop any wandering hands. It comes with a fully functioning lock and key, plus has been cleaned and traditionally waxed polished by our highly skilled and well trained specialist antique furniture restorers in our workshops before being offered for sale. circa 1760. Height 5.5in. Width 10.25in. Depth 5.75in. SHIPPING THE BOTANICAL NAME FOR THE MAHOGANY THIS ITEM IS MADE FROM IS SWIETENIA MACROPHYLLA AND THIS TYPE OF MAHOGANY IS NOT SUBJECT TO CITES REGULATION.
