About the Item

Antique Sterling Silver tea caddy / box Style Georgian, French Empire, Napoleonic, Dutch A sterling silver very stylized tea box with good working lock Decorated with embossed pearls Origin Netherland 1806 Hallmark - Lion - 925 sterling silver, Amsterdam assay office, Yearletter X 1806 Condition: very good Height 4.3in - 11cm Width 4.5in - 11.5cm Depth 2.7in - 7cm Silver has a long history. In addition to utensils, they are also ornamental & showpieces, masterfully made. Silverware used to be mainly considered an investment. In times of war or crisis, the silverware was melted down and cashed in again. It was therefore of great importance that the indicated silver content was correct. At the silver guild, the silversmith promised under oath that he would not process gold and silver that did not meet the specified quality. The master's mark on silver was originally intended to expose silversmiths who did not adhere to the set silver levels. Today it is mainly seen as a personal stamp. In this way it tells us more about the maker and the time from which the silverware originates. The ornamental pieces are openwork cut by hand or molded representations, cast, works of art hammered into exceptional shapes that are guaranteed to steal the show at the table. Dining with silver makes every moment special.
