Rare Pair of Karl Hagenauer Werkstätte Wien Art Deco Candelabras, ca. 1925

About the Item

In 1898, Carl Hagenauer founded what came to be known as the “Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien” company. His son, Karl Hagenauer (1898-1956) eventually assumed leadership of the family business in 1928, the year his father Carl died, and went on to become a highly influential Austrian designer in the Art Deco style. The firm produced an array of household decorative objects such as mirrors, ashtrays, candlesticks, bookends, hood ornaments and lamp bases with furniture being added later on. Karl’s stylized animal and whimsical creatures, very much in the Art Deco manner, were used as recurring motifs in these objects, capturing the attention of domestic and especially American markets where they found broad appeal. These rare candelabras, ca. 1925 are exemplary of the exceptional creative genius of Karl Hagenauer. The stylized dogs and cats are cleverly interwoven into a “demi-lune” shape creating a most appealing and aesthetically eye-pleasing metal canvas. They are made from nickel-plated brass and are stamped to the underside with the following: “Hagenauer Wien” and “Made in Vienna Austria” and their logo WHW within a circle. They are in good condition with signs of wear consistent with their age. There is loss of finish to the footed bases as the photos clearly show. DIMENSIONS: Height: 9.5 in. (24.1 cm.) Width: 9.25 in. (23.5 cm.) Thickness of metal in the main design part (demi-lune): 0.25 in. (0.64 cm.) Base diameter: 4.38 in. (11.1 cm.)
