About the Item

A very unusual pair of George III Neo Classical Candlesticks made in Sheffield in 1775 by John Winter & Company. The Candlesticks display a square base decorated with a band of raised stylised shells, in an oval surround, interspersed with blue bell drops. The incuse sides rise to the circular column and are decorated with Classical drapery swags, tied with ribbons, above an oval beaded medallion, surrounded by blue bell drops. The circular columns are unusually decorated with raised spiral bands of blue bell drops and rise to a capital decorated with beading, acanthus spears and blue bells. The square nozzle displays an outer band of foliate motifs. The Candlesticks are very well marked on the base, and on the nozzles, and are modelled in an unusual size. The bases are loaded with mahogany, which was always a sign of quality of production. Sheffield had a reputation for producing very unusual candlestick designs during the late 18th century, especially in the Neo Classical style. The Candlesticks are in excellent condition and the raised decoration is still detailed and crisp. John Winter and Company produced candlesticks in Sheffield during this period, very often of innovative design. Additional information: Height: 9.1 inches, 2.28 cm.
