About the Item

An exceptionally fine pair of George III Neo Classical Candlesticks made in London in 1771 by John Carter. The exceptionally fine Neo Classical Column Candlesticks stand on a square base decorated with bold beading below beautiful raised blue bell garlands tied with ribbons and cascading over oval medallions containing stylised flower heads. The front displays an oval disc cartouche engraved with a contemporary lion rampant Crest. The columns are unusually plain, as they are nearly always fluted and the top is modelled in the Corithian order of columns, with acanthus spears and scrolls. Each has a detachable nozzle, with incuse sides and beaded border. The candlesticks are loaded and are fully marked on the base and with the maker's mark and sterling mark on the nozzles. Both are in excellent condition, with very crisp decoration. John Carter was a great exponent of the Neo Classical and was patronised by King George III and his son the Prince of Wales, later King George IV. Additional information: Height: 12.5 inches, 31.25 cm. Base Diameter: 7 inches.
