About the Item
A patinated brass handled candle holder by Karl Hagenauer for Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien. The candle holder dates from the 1950’s.
The candle holder is 3 3/4 inches tall, 2 1/2 inches at its widest and 3 5/8 inches deep. Some of the Hagenauer markings are barely legable on the bottom, but the candle stick is well documented.
Carl Hagenauer (1872-1928) was an award-winning designer and craftsman, he founded what became the Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien in Vienna, Austria in 1898, his workshop was a success in its early years. His oldest of two sons, Karl Hagenauer (1898–1956), joined the family business in 1919 and eventually assumed leadership of the business in 1928. Karl Hagenauer enrolled at the Universität für Angewandte Kunst (University of Applied Arts) at age eleven. He studied with Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad and created designs for the Wiener Werkstätte art collective. After wartime service in the infantry, he resumed his training and qualified as an architect. He designed the company’s trademark “wHw” ( Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien) and registered it in 1927. The first catalogue to use the trademark dates to 1928, the year his father died and Karl Hagenauer assumed leadership of the business. While Hagenauer was the principal designer of everyday objects, and some sculptures, his younger brother Franz Hagenauer (1906-1986 ) joined the company in the 1930’s and specialized in sculpture. The company later also produced furniture, chiefly designed by Julius Jirasek. Karl Hagenauer exhibited his products at international fairs and traveled to America to visit two prestigious dealers: Rena Rosenthal (1880-1966) owner of an exclusive gallery in Manhattan and John Wanamaker (1838-1922), a pioneer of the department store concept, with major Philadelphia and New York stores. The scale of exports to the USA between 1920 and 1938 is obvious today with so many early Hagenauer objects showing up in American estate sales and antique shops. The Museum of Modern Art has Hagenauer pieces in their collection in New York. Being pretty much a workaholic, the stress became so great, Karl Hagenauer died of a heart attack at the age of 57 in 1956. Franz took leadership of the company and became principle designer of decorative objects. Architect Julius Jirasek designed some furniture at this time. Franz Hagenauer died in 1986, former work master Karl Schmidt took over briefly. But without agreement with Franz’s heirs on a contract, the workshop closed in 1987.

Karl Hagenauer
Karl Hagenauer was an important and popular figure in the decorative arts in Vienna in the decades bracketing the Second World War. While primarily a maker of sculptural decorative pieces, Hagenauer — in the same spirit as his peer Carl Auböck— created a wide array of household objects, from barware to office accessories, all designed with wit and a sleek modernist aesthetic.
Hagenauer’s father was a trained metalsmith who founded a bronzewares manufactory that produced decorative metalwork and housewares in both traditional and the then-novel Art Nouveau styles and cast small sculptures based on Old Masters paintings. After studying art and design at Vienna’s School of Applied Arts, where his teachers included architect Josef Hoffmann, a founder of the Wiener Werkstätte, he joined his father’s workshop in 1919 and began crafting items that reflected Hoffman’s modernist aesthetic. In the 1920s and ’30s, he developed an often-imitated style that combines the lithe, lissome lines of Art Nouveau (known in central Europe as Jugendstil) with the simple, unadorned forms of Art Deco. He worked primarily in brass — both polished and nickel-plated — as well as wood.
In addition to domestic items such as smoking accoutrements, teapots, trays, bowls, candleholders and tableware, Hagenauer produced a wide array of small-scale sculptures. (His younger brother, Franz— who took over the family business when their father died — was also a noted sculptor, with a style that could be described as Art-Deco-meets-Brancusi.) Karl’s sculptures fall into two main groups: humorous and whimsical animal and character figures that will remind many of the work of artist Tom Otterness and sleek, stylized animal and human forms, many with an African theme — an “exotic” connotation that was a 20th-century remnant of colonialism. As you will see from the items on offer, Karl Hagenauer was an artist-designer of great talent and many moods: affable, stylish and practical.

BIOGRAPHY OF DESIGNER
Tommi Anton Parzinger (1903–1981) was a German interior designer; a lighting, accessories and furniture designer and an artist. Born in Munich in 1903, Parzinger was raised in an artistic family, he studied at the Kunstgewebeschule, focusing his art studies on ceramic, glass, metal and wood crafts , as well as painting. Parzinger immigrated to New York City in 1932, his first job in America was as a designer for Rena Rosenthal, designing metalware and crystel to be sold at her trend setting Madison Avenue shop. During his tenure at Rena Rosenthal Parzinger began creating furniture and accessories to accompany his celebrated work in brass and crystal. His interest in these ancillary pieces grew steadily throughout the 1930’s and in 1938 he took a position designing furniture for Charak in Boston. In 1939 he opened Parzinger Originals, designing custom furnishings for clients and commissioned custom interiors. Parzinger's designs were labeled "high-style modernism", which represented a more idiosyncratic, rarefied midcentury design style. His cosmopolitan designs involved costly, craft-intensive materials and processes using brass accents and lacquer. As his business grew, Parzinger continued his work in graphic design, fashioning packaging, fabrics and wallpapers . He also continued to design furniture, lighting, and accessories for other companies, including Reed and Barton, Lightolier, Salterini Hofstatter, and Dorlyn. In the 1940’s Donald Cameron became his partner and expanded the company with locations at 32 East 57th Street, 601 Fifth Avenue, and 441 Madison Avenue.
