About the Item

hand carved from pine in the 1700s, this unique Italian altar candlestick holder features a lovely foliate rinceaux dotted with volute scrolls. The intricate weaving of curled leaves is topped by a floral bouquet. There are seven iron prickets on the back side, with three attached to the back of the crown. Four prickets are set quite a bit lower (two on each side), making for a multi-tiered and widespread lighting display. The rinceaux has been affixed to the top of a base with an overhanging quarter round molding and a thick cavetto bottom. Small traces of old gesso indicate this piece was likely gilded and/or painted in the 1700s. Our 18th century altar candlestick can still be used as a unique lighting source or as a decorative accessory. At roughly, 32 inches by 32 inches, our shapely Italian candle holder will make a striking impression wherever it is placed.
