Very Rare Archibald Knox Liberty & Co. Candleholder Signed c1900
About the Item
Archibald Knox (1864-1933) decorative candle holder in copper and brass is in excellent condition. The impressed stamps on the bottom underside read “Liberty & Co.”, “A. Knox” and “NEW YORK”. Since the company typically kept the identities of their designers anonymous, the fact that Archibald Knox's signature is present makes this piece extremely rare.
Impressed on the bottom is also the early 0147 turdric number.
No visible damages. No dents, scratches evident. Has original patina.
This decorative piece may have been used as a candle holder or simple as a stunning example of the artistic talent of Archibald Knox and the Arts & Crafts movement.
It has two large emblems on two sides and two smaller round emblems on the other two sides. There are two small curved handles on either side. There is also a raised 1.5" round area at the top supported by 4 metal supports for a candle perhaps.
It stands 7.5" (19cm) high. The base is 4" x 4" (10cm)
Archibald Knox was born in Cronkbourne Village, Isle of Mann and was a Manx designer of Scottish descent. He is best known as being Liberty's primary designer at the height of their success and influence upon UK and International design. Knox's work bridged the Arts and Crafts Movement, Celtic Revival, Art Nouveau, and Modernism. He is seen as a leading figure of the Modern Style movement.

Rare O.B. McClintock Wall Bank Clock, c. 1920
By O.B. McClintock Co.
Located in Hampstead, QC
A rare piece of 20th century Americana that has survived to this day. It harkens back to a time of “Peyton Place” when outdoor bank clocks or clocks atop a lamppost in the town square were commonplace instilling in us a feeling of communal security and good ol’ American values.
In 1908, O.B. McClintock opened the O.B. McClintock Co. company to manufacture clocks which he sold to financial institutions all across the United States. According to one newspaper of the period, the Minneapolis Golden Jubilee, “these clocks not only advertise financial institutions in a dignified impressive manner but add to the refinement and culture of the community which they adorn.”
The clock presented here is mounted within a dark brown vintage wooden case...
