About the Item

The large and elegant antique French Empire style bronze and marble figural clock features a rectangular stepped base of dark green marble, raised on four gilt bronze feet cast with lion masks. The front of the base is mounted with a rectangular gilt bronze panel in high relief, depicting two winged putti holding floral garlands flanking a central medallion with two standing cherubs, all framed by scrolling foliage and ribbon-tied swags. Above the base, the central clock housing is formed in a rectangular block of matching marble, bordered with a gilt bronze molding. The circular enamel dial, with black Roman numerals and Arabic minute markings, is set within a gilt bronze bezel and encircled by a marble surround. Below the dial, a gilt bronze mount of crossed torches and quivers is applied. Flanking the clock case are two patinated bronze winged figures, each shown standing with one foot forward and leaning inward toward the other. One figure holds a gilt floral wreath aloft, placing it upon the other’s head, while the other figure raises an arm toward their counterpart’s shoulder. Both figures are rendered with detailed feathered wings, defined musculature, and draped fabric around the hips. The patina contrasts with the surrounding marble and gilt bronze elements, emphasizing the sculptural composition. The composition and decorative program align with the French Empire style, combining classical themes with rich materials. The use of gilt bronze mounts with high-relief allegorical and mythological figures, paired with dark green marble, is characteristic of Parisian clockmaking of the early 19th century. The piece demonstrates the period’s preference for integrating sculpture and functional objects, with the winged figures serving as both decorative and structural elements supporting the clock case.
