About the Item

A fine 19th century figured mahogany longcase clock by Aaron Brokaw, Rahway, New Jersey. This American clock has a scrolled swan neck top, surmounted by a brass finial, above an arched glazed door, flanked by mahogany turned pillars. The case has an unusual segmented trunk door, with contrasting banding, flanked by fluted columns. The clock stands on a square base, supported on turned feet. The movement with anchor escapement is of 8 day duration, and strikes on a single bell. The painted arched dial, with original crackelure finish is decorated with fruit, flowers and shells, has Arabic hour and minutes numerals, two brass ringed winding holes, a subsidiary dial, and date aperture. It is signed in script by the maker, “Aaron Brakow, Rahway, NJ.” *Aaron Brokaw (1768-1853) came from a noted family of American clockmakers based in New Jersey. Aaron’s grandfather, Aaron Miller (died 1777), for whom he was named, was also a clockmaker of some note, based in Elizabethtown. Miller was said to be of Dutch extraction and had lived in New York before moving to Elizabethtown. He is first mentioned in the New York Gazeteer on November 23, 1747 as a “clockmaker in Elizabethtown [who]…makes and sells all sorts of clocks after the Dutch manner…he likewise makes compasses and chains for surveyors.” Isaac Brokaw (1746-1826), Aaron Brokaw’s father, was apprenticed to Miller, married his daughter Elizabeth, and inherited clock-making tools from Miller in 1777. Aaron was working with his father Isaac, who had moved to Bridge Town, from about 1805. Aaron Brokaw’s first clocks are signed “Aaron Brokaw, Bridge Town” and later “Aaron Brokaw, Rahway NJ.” He seems to have taken over his father’s business upon his death in 1826. The painted dials for his clocks were often ordered from the Osborne Factory in Birmingham, England – Birmingham was the centre for enamelled and painted clock dials from the late 18th century onwards.

A fine Regency longcase clock in the form of a domestic regulator in an architectural mahogany case with inset panels of satinwood and ebonized mouldings. The case of this clock shows the distinct influence of Thomas Hope, the eminent antiquarian and designer who was inspired by the Greek and Egyptian designs. The 12in square brass dial has a silvered finish and is engraved with Roman chapters and subsidiary second’s dial. The dial is signed within the lower section 'Barwise, London'. The eight day duration movement is of the highest quality, with five pillars, dead beat escapement, maintaining power and hour strike on a bell. The pendulum has a wood rod for temperature compensation with beat adjustment and rating nut beneath the brass bob. The clock is complete with the original brass cased weights.
