18th Century Louis XVI Marble Gilt Bronze Dancing Girl Pendule after Falconet

About the Item

18th century French Louis XVI marble gilt bronze dancing girl pendule after Falconet, signed "Courvoisier à Paris" An 18th century French gilt bronze and white Carrara marble pendule or mantel (fireplace) clock in the shape of a fluted semicircle column, which holds the gilt bronze drum case with a circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals signed 'Courvoisier à Paris". The column is surmounted by a small gilt bronze or ormolu sculpture of a little girl, dressed in the Rococo fashion, wearing a straw hat and holding her skirt up to execute her dance steps. the sculpture is very elaborately executed with excellent gilding and refined chiseling, the girl displaying a charming facial expression. The figure of the dancing girl, "danseuse" in French, has its origin in a porcelain figure after a model by Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716-1791) which he made for the Manufacture Royale de Porcelaine in Sèvres after an etching by Francois Boucher ( 1703-1770) during his time as director of the sculpture atelier of the Sèvres manufactory from lasting from 1757 to 1766. The original porcelain sculpture was accompanied by a watering can which at our bronze figure was replaced by a tree stump. The porcelain figure was part of a pair, its counterpart being a boy playing a bagpipe. The spring driven movement by David Louis Courvoisier, who originally came from Neuchâtel and worked in paris until his death 1773 (see: Pierre Kjellberg: Encyclope´die de la Pendule Franc¸aise, Paris 1994, p. 222): anchor escapement, silk thread suspension, striking on the hour and half hour on a single bell. In working condition. Excellent 18th century Louis XVI period pendule or mantel (fireplace) clock with a charming and elaborately cast and gilt bronze girl sculpture providing beauty to a classical as well as a modern ambiance.
