Antique Gilt Bronze and Champlevé Enamel Clock Set

About the Item

This beautiful mantlepiece set — which includes a clock and a pair of candelabra —was created in France in the late 19th century, circa 1870. The set is designed in an elegant Louis XVI (Neoclassical) style. It has been crafted from gilt bronze (ormolu) and ornately decorated with champlevé enamel. Enamelling is a type of ancient art - more accurately a form of decorative art - used most often in goldsmithery to decorate metal items, although the method is also associated with glass or ceramic objects. Typically enamellists coat the object with a mixture of powdered glass and other materials, then fire the whole thing in a kiln. The mixture fuses with the object, giving a smooth, glass-like effect. The addition of certain metallic ores to the powdered glass can produce a range of vivid colours. Like Cloisonné enamelling, Champlevé is designed to add colour and glitter to metalwork, by creating small "compartments", which are then filled with vitreous (glass-like) enamel or inlays of precious stones and heated to fusion-point in a kiln. Once the enamel or stone inlay has cooled, it is smoothed with pumice stone and polished. The art of champlevé enamelling reached its zenith during the period of Romanesque architecture and early Gothic architecture. The mantel clock is composed of a tall rectangular case with a break arch top which is topped by a patinated bronze bird. At the centre of the case, there is a circular dial with Roman Numerals. Different from the usual dials, this one has a navy enamel layer and is decorated with a wreath of roses interwoven with leaves. 4 patinated bronze sculptures on the clock make it outstanding. These take the form of female figures in classical dress holding instruments and patinated bronze Putto figures playing the trumpets. The candelabra are of complementary design to the clock. The pair of candelabra in the set are designed in a matching style to the clock.

This colorful pedestal clock has been crafted from fine red marble and green onyx, and beautifully decorated with gilt bronze (ormolu) and champlevé enamel. While a popular crafts material in ancient times, onyx was largely forgotten about until its rediscovery in the mid-19th century in Algeria by a French marble-worker called Delmonte. Onyx became highly fashionable in France following this discovery, and it was used to create a variety of decorative art objects. The clock features a green onyx cube-shaped case, which is surmounted by a slightly projecting red marble top. This top is fringed with champlevé enamel drapery-like motifs, with gilt bronze drop-finials. The case is mounted on its front with a circular dial, which features a central floral champlevé enamel motif, encircled by black Arabic Numerals.
