Automaton Clock with Moving Cupid, Vienna, 19th Century, Biedermeier, circa 1820

About the Item

Automat clock "blacksmith and grinder" Vienna Wood, alabaster, enamel, brass Biedermeier, circa 1820 Dimensions: H x W 53 x 35 cm Ebonized wood base standing on squeeze ballfeet. Portico with four columns in alabaster with fine bases and capitals in embossed brass. Head with colored carving typical of the region. Applications in brass. Behind domed glass we see the enamel dial ring with Arabic numerals. Inside the ring are the moving figures, on the left cupid as a blacksmith, on the right cupid as a grinder. Every quarter of an hour, with the sound of the stroke the figures move and thus strike the time. The clock can be muted by means of a lever in the upper right corner above the "1". By means of a string at the bottom right, the previous quarter-hour strike can be retriggered - so-called repetition. One-day movement with strike on two gongs. Silk suspension of the pendulum. Worth knowing: This type of case, as well as the automaton figures that forge and grind the love arrows, are quite typical of Vienna in the early 19th century. Condition: Fully functional condition of the movement and automat. Restored, perfect condition of the case. Of course I can send you a video to see the function! Comparable objects can be found in the technical literature: Peter Heuer, Klaus Maurice - Europäische Pendeluhren p. 292 Karl-Ernst Becker, Hatto Küffner - Uhren p. 125 Interesting information about ebonizing: "Ebonizing" means the blackening of wood. In this way it was tried to imitate the very expensive ebony. This technique is particularly common in antique furniture from the Biedermeier era. At that time ebony was very popular to create contrasts to light woods like cherry, birch or ash. Those who found ebony too expensive imitated it by staining native wood black. The pear wood with a weak grain was best suited for this purpose. The blackening was achieved by mixing shellac with soot and then polishing the elements to be blackened with this mixture. Solid ebony was used for inlaid key plates, for example. Larger parts like columns or mouldings were rather ebonized. Especially in the Viennese Biedermeier period, ebonizing was so popular that complete furniture was blackened. The technique was equally popular in French Historicism, in the so-called "Napoleon III" era.

This fine, antique mantel clock is constructed in ebonised wood by the renowned Parisian maker of automata, Xavier Tharin (French, active mid 19th Century).
