an Empire ormolu and patinated bronze mangel clock after a drawing by DeVerberie

About the Item

Rare pendulum called "au negre" represents a sailor with glass eyes, leaning against a bale of cotton and smoking his pipe, a rope in his hand. We find around him the attributes of maritime trade: barrel, purse and coins, anchor, oar decorated with fish. It rests on a base decorated in bas reliefs representing cherubs unloading a ship. It rests on four feet simulating barrels. Original enamelled dial signed "Champion, rue de la Feuillade in Paris" with Roman numerals. Two small chips formerly restored. Original wire movement, revised and cleaned by a watchmaker. Pendulum working perfectly. Supplied with its winding key and its adjustment key. Perfect condition, original mercury gilding, no lack, no accident. Works perfectly without advance or delay, ringing OK. Model from the Empire period, According to a drawing by Jean Simon Deverberie (1764-1824), a haberdasher of the time, these clocks called "Au Bon Sauvage" had found great success at the beginning of the 19th century. Symbol of exoticism, trade, travel, these clocks were appreciated by a clientele of scholars, with a pre-romantic vision of the world. Comparative bibliography: P. Kjellberg, "Encyclopaedia of the French clock from the Middle Ages to the 20th century", Éditions de Amateur, p.343, fig. AHOttomeyer, P.Pröschel, et al.
