An English gilt brass chronometer carriage timepiece with original travelling case, key and bill of sale. The grained gilt tapering case has a folding handle with bevelled glass panel to the top, bevelled glass panels to the sides and a solid rear plate with hand setting function and start/stop lever, signed Thomas Mercer and numbered 1184, dating from 1974 The silvered dial signed Thomas Mercer, with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and a state of wind indicator. Blued steel hands. The substantial eight day chain fusee movement with maintaining power, Earnshaw type detent escapement with a free-sprung palladium helical balance spring and heavy bimetallic balance. The original black leather tooled travelling case with lift out front cover is lined in blue velvet and the original safety winding key is stored in the top. Thomas Mercer was founded in 1858, and became one of the greatest chronometer makers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Ernest Shakleton used a Mercer chronometer on the 1914 Imperial Trans-Antartic Expedition, after the Endurance became trapped and destroyed in the pack ice, he heroically journeyed in a whaleboat, the James Caird, to South Georgia to get help for his stranded compatriots. A fine antique Swiss silver gilt & guilloched enamel miniature carriage clock, retailed by Birks of Montreal, Circa 1910, just fully cleaned & overhaul by a professional clocksmith. The clock having a silver gilt case with guilloched enamel decoration, the rare & unusual decoration inspired by the architecture of the Alhambra and Moorish Spain, in the form of long mihrab shaped windows punctuated with circular white enameled 'jewels'. The base with a frieze of silver gilt spheres and the clock is raised on a striated agate base. The white enameled dial having black Arabic numerals & gold hands and is signed "Birks", for the famous Montreal retailer who sold luxury jewelery & timepieces. The clock having a seven day 15 jeweled lever mechanism, the clock is identical to others made for Cartier in Geneva and had been marked with "Birks" name as they were the retailers of this clock. The clock is stamped to the rear "Sterling" & "Argent" & 0.935, Geneva assay mark '935'. The clock was most likely designed by Maurice Coüet who designed clocks for both Cartier & The Geneva Clock Co. The clock is stamped with the "JTC" mark in a cartouche. A fine and unusual miniature carriage or boudoire clock in silver gilt and decorated with pink guilloche enamel on four sides, with fine engine turned design to the back, by Eterna. The enamel is perfect with no chips or damage, and the clock retains the gilding to the silver. The particularly unusual feature of this clock is that it is an alarm which is a very rare feature. More than this the alarm function has been fitted to a very fine 8 day 3/4 plate movement with 15 Jewels, with cut bimetallic balance and breguet overcoil balance spring.
