Fine and Early Ormolu Clock by Raingo Frères and Henri Picard of Paris

About the Item

A fine and early ormolu (mercury gilded bronze) boudoir clock of small and delicate proportions. It is Rococo in style, decorated with elaborate flowing foliage, scrolls and floral swags. The gilding is in lovely condition, we have carefully removed the years of grime to reveal the original fire gilding beneath. The clock sits upon an integral base with the pendulum visible, gently swinging. The dial is also ormolu with 12 individual enamel cartouches and blued steel hands. The hand fretted and blued steel hands are original. There are glazed rope bezels to the front and rear with convex glass to the rear to allow the movement to be seen. Unusually, the case is marked with the movement serial number, along with the founder's mark of Henri Picard. The French movement is by Raingo Frères and is of high quality. It is the early version of the Pendule de Paris movement with outside Hammer stop. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running. Zacharie Raingo was apprenticed in Paris in 1790 and went on to establish Raingo Frères in 1813. Initially specialising in precision astronomical clocks and then after 1825 clocks and bronzes. Clients included the Emperor and Empress. The firm exhibited at many of the important exhibitions of the second half of the 19th century and was known for the fine quality of its ormolu. Henri Picard - The important founder and Gilder Henri Picard was based in Paris at 6, rue Jarente from 1831 to 1839, before moving to 10, rue de la Perle. The firm was active until around 1890. Celebrated for the high quality of his production, Henri Picard supplied many important patrons, including garnand table pieces for the petits appartements of Emperor Napoleon III at the Louvre. An important pair of twelve-light candelabra by Picard remain in the Muse´e du Louvre today. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with just some wear to the gilding on the high spots. The dial is also in excellent with no damage. The front glass has a slight chip to the edge and the rear glass has some scratching. A stunning clock ready to display. Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

French Porcelain Mantel clock by Raingo Freres, Paris French porcelain mantel clock housed in an arch top case with raised stepped plinth and resting on scroll feet. Outstanding hand painted panel to the front with gilt surround depicting two maidens attending a fatally wounded knight. Beautifully decorated to all sides with flowers, birds and butterfly on a white ground with gilt decorative border to the plinth. Chased gilded bezel, silvered dial with Roman numerals and original ‘blued’ steel Moonpoise hands signed Raingo Fres, a Paris. French eight day movement with silk suspension, anchor escapement and outside countwheel, striking the hours and halves on a silvered bell. The backplate signed Raingo Fres, a Paris and numbered 301. C.1850 Raingo Freres worked from Rue Vielle Du Temple c.1829, also from Rue De Saintonge between 1840 to 1850. The company continued trading in Paris until the early 1900’s. A spectacular and very important French early 19th century Louis XVI st. white Carrara marble and ormolu clock by Raingo Frères. The clock is raised by elegant topie shaped feet with fine wrap around berried laurel bands below the white Carrara marble base with rounded sides decorated with richly chased pierced intertwined berried laurel and blooming flower bands, and a finely detailed central plaque depicting charming cherubs playing musical instruments. Above are two exquisite patinated bronze maidens sitting on a mottled support with lovely foliate designs each draped in wonderfully executed garments and holding a wreath and flowers with a charming winged cherub extending his arms up. A stunning and very high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. ormolu and Rouge Griotte marble clock signed Raingo Frères. The clock is raised by two elegant rectangular reeded supports at the front and circular spiral fluted feet behind below striking richly chased elongated rosettes centering a fine pierced fitted intertwined laurel branch also repeated at the rounded sides. At the center is an impressive pierced fitted ormolu mount with Rinceau shaped scrolled acanthus leaves and berried laurel garlands flanked by striking fluted columns with fitted decorative ormolu chandelles and stunning lightly curved richly chased cornucopias with ribbons at each side. The enamel dial displays Roman numeral hour markings and Arabic numeral minute markings with elegant pierced foliate ormolu hands framed within an elegant mottled bezel with foliate and beaded designs. Above is the remarkable top crown a richly chased berried laurel wreath, a quiver, arrows, a bow and the eternal flame all tied with a flowing ribbon and displaying a wonderful satin and burnished finish.
