French Louis XVI Style Napoleon III Bronze Mounted Malachite Mantel Clock

About the Item

This mantel clock depicts a mythological group scene in bronze of figures representing a cupid with a torch in his right hand in clouds made of scrolls and foliage flirting with a semi nude Venus while another cupid is observing them. The clock case is embedded to a cartouche made of scrolls alternated with shells which in turn is attached to a square malachite block. The porcelain dial has Roman numerals and the hands are delicately shaped as hearts. It is signed Pobtil Nevers. This square block is resting in an elongated malachite base that is adorned by a braiding and beading bronze moulding. The frontal aspect of this base is also embellished by a bronze bas relief scene of cherubs playing musical instruments. The lateral and posterior aspect of the base is adorned with a garland of palmettos leaves. The oval base is supported by six toupie feet. This mantel clock is a six days movement with hour and half hour mechanism of bells. In the inside back of the mechanism appears 1897.
