Table clock, ormolu, Jean Vincenti & Cie, France, circa 1840 Ormolu bronze round Paris machine, pendulum, 8-day string, hour and a half bell on bell. Signed. Table clock made of ormolu bronze, composed of a raised base on polygonal legs of architectural lines (with scrolls and smooth oval mirrors) and decorated with pinching elements under the molding of the base and a composition at the front featuring a crowned heraldic shield and surrounded by scrolls and vegetal forms and scrolls, without the delicate decoration hiding the elegant and clean lines of this part. On the pedestal the clock case has been placed inside a little table decorated with scrolls and vegetal motifs (with shapes and movement reminiscent of 18th century Rococo works); it has a bronze dial and Roman numerals for hours, as well as lines for minutes and "Breguet" type needles. Flanking this table are the two figures: a richly dressed gentleman, with a fur-trimmed cape over his doublet and leggings, with the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck, his hat on a low chair next to him, he is looking towards the lady, whom she holds by a hand; she, with a similar outfit in quality and category, appears crowned and with a veil that does not cover her hair at all. Between them and on the table, on top of a cushion, two crowns appear. The heraldic shield of the base presents a crosssection, with castles on a striped background and rampant crowned lions, and an oval escutcheon in the centre decorated with fine linear elements in symmetrical composition. Clearly, alludes with him to the Crown of Castile (without Aragon, Navarre, Kingdom of Granada). This element, together with the presence of the necklace of the Order of the Golden Fleece with the fleecy Golden Fleece, clearly point to the Spanish Monarchy. It is also necessary to indicate that two watches are known (European private collections) with these same figures but much simpler bases (one of the cases in white marble with bronze appliqués). As for the identity of the figures, it is difficult to determine exactly: the Golden Fleece marks a pair of monarchs descendants of Philip the Fair and Juana, and the fashion of the figures places them in the Baroque. Jean Vicenti began to manufacture watches before 1823 in Montbeliard (France), but his bankruptcy (a year later) meant that he had to focus only on the movements of the watches. He passed away in 1834, at the head of a prosperous business and with several and outstanding prizes (Medaille d'Argent in 1855), won by the quality of his work. In France, this distribution of work was usual when creating a quality table clock, usually being a workshop responsible for the figures (and porcelain, stone, etc. when there is one) and another that deals with the machinery of the clock, thus reaching a level of quality that made the French works of the time the most appreciated."
