Pendulum Borne in Gilt Bronze, Allegory of the Goddess Hera, Period Restoration
Located in CRÉTEIL, FR
Sublime pendulum in gilded bronze, the mercury gilding is original. The dial is white enamelled and the hours are written in Roman numerals. Period: Restoration Dimensions: Height: 48.5cm x Length: 34.5cm x Depth: 12.5cm Original mechanism without modification. Overhauled by a watchmaker and in perfect working order. A bollard-type model, it represents the myth of the Goddess Hera skillfully staged. Hera is the protective goddess par excellence of women and the goddess of legitimate marriage, guardian of the fertility of the couple and of women in childbirth. Here we are in the presence of a scepter or figure two alliances, feminine and masculine entwined, symbolizing the legitimate union of marriage. No veil for our beautiful goddess but an amphora filled with water, a reference once again to the history of our goddess where each year we celebrated the hierogamy, the sacred marriage of Hera and Zeus, which marked the renewal vegetation. Hera regained her virginity in the living waters of springs and rivers. Beneath the dial, a magnificent peacock is revealed, the favorite animal of our Greek divinity Hera, wife of Zeus. According to Greek mythology the “eyes” visible on the tail of the peacock were placed there by Hera to commemorate her faithful guardian, Argos, who had a hundred eyes (Ovid I, 625). According to legend, Argos was hired by Hera, jealous of Io, one of the nymphs courted by her husband Zeus, whom she suspected of adultery. She transformed the young woman into a heifer and entrusted her guardianship to the giant to spy on her husband. Argos possessed a hundred eyes and kept fifty of them open which constantly watched...

The dial with Roman numerals and gilded steel Breguet style hands for the hours and minutes. In addition to the above prestigious locations, clocks of this model can be found at Warsaw Castle and in the Bayerischen Nationalmuseum, Munich. The Parisian clockmaker Bailly (d. after 1818) was one of the finest of his day and as such earned the title of Horloger de LL. MM. II. Et RR (Clockmaker to Their Imperial and Royal Majesties). Working from rue de Richelieu he was with Lepaute one of the main suppliers to the Garde-Meuble. Bailly, who retired in 1818 had the responsibility of maintaining the clocks at Compiègne and the Trianons and is known to have used cases by the leading Parisian bronziers including Pierre-Philippe Thomire and Claude Galle as well as Ferdinand Schwerdfeger who supplied him with a case for a regulator surmounted by a star-studded and zodiac banded globe...

France, circa 1810 -1820 Table Clock with a Handmaid Mercury Gilded Bronze
Located in Milan, IT
France, circa 1810 -1820 Table clock with a handmaid Mercury gilded bronze, alt. cm 59.5 x 40.5 x 13 Signed in the quadrant "Sezille Palais Royal Nº 133 à Paris" Akin to the prevailing taste of the Napoleonic era that envisaged a return to antiquity, the Empire Style was used for the decoration of furniture, architectural structures, furnishings, wall hangings and fabrics. The style envisaged a classical return to order, embellished by the antiquarian whimsy inspired by the recent archaeological discoveries at Herculaneum and Pompeii: the constant Roman and Hellenistic remembrance was celebrated through applications depicting laurel or oak garlands, imperial symbolism, mythological figures, sphinxes, muses, personifications and more. This watch organises the mechanical case on a parallelepiped supporting structure, subdivided into two parts connected by a sinuous greek decoration with flowers; the whole structure rests on the plane by means of convex feet decorated with a dense network of small flowers inscribed within a modular rhombus, culminating, in the attachment to the central body of the watch, with a theory of palmettes. The upper part of the parallelepiped body, inscribed with mythological figuration like the ancient stelae, encloses the latter with a frame of stylised palm leaves interspersed with discs of flowers, in turn accompanied, on the two vertical sides, by a lively vegetal triumph. Considering the iconographic range used by the bronzeworkers for the decoration of the clocks, it is possible to recognise in the mythological scene depicted the muse of poetry and music, Calliope, accompanied by the attributes of the lyre and the laurel branch, used to pay homage to poets. The two winged geniuses in front of her carry scrolls and plates on which to engrave the verses the muse dictates daily to men; the reward for human intellect is emphasised by the two similar crowns the muse holds in her hands, depicting a serpent biting its tail. This symbol, which the mediaeval era would borrow from the Hellenistic-Roman environment of Gnosticism by creating the figure of the uroboros, metaphorically manifests the purpose of the clock, being used to personify the eternal return of time and the cyclical nature of the material life of men. The case of the watch is enclosed in a zither, which is flanked by a woman crowned with laurel; the upper part has two griffin heads in correspondence with the arms of the zither, and a second female face crowned with a ring of petals/rays, again alluding to the sublime elevation of poetry. On the right side of the instrument rests a lighted torch accompanied by an extinguished upside-down torch, an allusion to present well-being, victorious over the failings of life, to which the bust of a philosopher in a disc also alludes. The dial has a porcelain ring while the hands are Breuguet. Mechanism with "anchor" escapement with silk-wire pendulum and chime...

Equestrian statue of William I and two candelabras with halberdiers
By Count Alfred Émilien O'Hara van Nieuwerkerke
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
Mantel garniture with clock and pair of candelabras in brown patinated bronze on Statuary marble and gilt bronze pedestals. Equestrian statue signed and dated : « E de Nieuwerkerke 1843 » on the base and bronze caster's mark « Susse Edt » Dimensions of the clock : H. 84 cm (33”1/16) x W. 46,5 cm (18”5/16) x D. 24,5 cm (9”11/16) Dimensions of the candelabras : H. 90,5 cm (35”5/8) x W. 25 cm (9”7/8) x D. 25 cm (9”7/8) At the “Salon des Artistes Français” in 1843, the young Count Alfred Emile de Nieuwerkerke (1811-1892), then aged 32, presented a plaster equestrian statue entitled William I, known as the Taciturn, Prince of Orange. A great nineteenth-century sculptor, Émile de Nieuwerkerke is best known for having been Head Director of the Museums since 1849, and probably the most influential man on cultural policy in France until the end of the Second Empire. Nieuwerkerke's fervor for art began when he became passionate for sculpture, at the age of 23, and took classes with the great James Pradier and Baron Carlo Marochetti. His connections allow him to realize official commissions, including the busts of the Empress Eugenie and Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. The Count de Nieuwerkerke made a name for himself at the 1838 Salon with the exhibition of the group The Death of the Duke of Clarence that really launched his career. Having been a pupil of Carlo Marochetti, a sculptor of Italian origin, the young Nieuwerkerke can only be strongly impressed by the equestrian statue of the Monument to Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy created by the master between 1833 and 1838 and adorning the Piazza San Carlo of Turin in Italy. There is no doubt that this monumental statue...
