An impressive large cartel clock adorned with musicians Gilt bronze Period Louis XV, circa 1760 Mecanism by J. B. Regnauld (1733-1809) clockmaker at Châlons sur Marne Gilt bronze attributed to Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain (1719-1791) Excellent original condition Dimensions : h. 47.24 in, w. 22.84 in. Provenance : collection Eduard Palmer (chief executive of Imperial and Royal Austrian Länderbank), Vienna, Austria. His estate sold at Dorotheum auction, Vienna, December 1 to 6, year 1915. This exceptional cartel clock we are offering here is one of the most representative works of Rocaille art during the reign Louis XV. The case is entirely executed in gilt bronze, very finely chiselled and depicts at its top a pastoral scene with a duo of musicians. A standing flute player, accompanied by a singer sitting on a rock holding a sheet music book. The couple are accompanied by a dog sitting quietly next to it and scratching its ear. The whole is embellished with flowery and foliage branches, volutes and large scrolls of acanthus, enclosing reserves lined with crimson velvet fabrics with pierced brass plates with stylized foliage and scrolls. This bucolic scene draws its inspiration from the paintings by Nicolas Lancret and Antoine Watteau. The circular white enamelled dial is signed “Regnauld à Chaalons”, indicates the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals by two pierced and gilded brass hands; the movement plate on the back is also signed. It strikes the hours, the half-hours, as well as the quarters, which was quite rare. Our cartel can be compared to an almost identical model whose movement is signed Pierre Le Roy...

An exquisite Louis XV style gilt and patinated bronze cartel clock. The eight-day two train bell striking movement, with vertically planted platform cylinder escapement and stamped with S. Marti et Cie MEDAILLE D'ARGENT. 1889 roundel and serial number 647 to backplate. The dial formed as a deep blue and gold flecked enamel dome applied with gilt Roman numerals and stars set within billowing clouds interspersed with sunburst rays. Applied with three patinated bronze cherubs in flight, around the dial attending to a floral garland. Amongst the clouds can be found a pair of doves, a horn and arrows, a quiver and bow. This coupled with the cherubs and flower garland would suggest this clock was made as a love token or wedding present. Constructed from gilt, hand-chased, and burnished bronze with patinated detail, the mantle clock on an asymmetric Rococo scrolling base with naturalistic features; the main body modelled as an elephant astride, mounted with a turbaned figure of a mahout (elephant keeper) in charge and his companion monkey, the elephant's back supporting a bamboo houdah enclosing the white enamelled dial marking the hours and minutes in Roman and Arabic numerals respectively, a tasselled cushion perched atop with two oriental figures holding parasols. French, circa 1840 Clocks incorporating animals reigned supreme during the Louis XV period, at a time when curiosity for new cultures was at its height. The exoticism found expression in the accounts of explorers describing rhinoceros, lions and elephants, which were enthusiastically absorbed into European decorative arts. The elephant acquired a particular aura following the diplomatic gift of the King of Siam to King Louis XIV of an elephant in 1686. Elephants had been used as motifs in horology since the Renaissance period, representing the theme of 'rulership' in the Kunstkammer, as seen in the Augsburg Automaton in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. "Late 18th Century - Kinable A Paris" Along a winding dirt path, the blind Belisarius carries his young guide. The boy has been bitten by a snake, which remains coiled around his bleeding leg. With his right arm wrapped limply around Belisarius's neck and his eyes closed, the youth balances precariously between life and death. Belisarius's eyes are also closed, but guided by his stick he moves forward with determination and purpose. He rises heroically against the spectacular sunset, a monumental figure creating a powerful outline against the sky. But the flaring sunset also signals a chill night and the uncertainty of the path ahead. Belisarius was a popular Byzantine general of the Roman Empire whose promising career was sabotaged by the jealous Emperor Justinian I. In 1767, a novel by Jean-François Marmontel revived interest in Belisarius. In Marmontel's novel, the emperor has the heroic general blinded, reducing Belisarius to begging. He is eventually rediscovered and aided by former officers and his family. This dramatic tale of patriotism, injustice, and redemption was widely embraced in revolutionary and post-revolutionary France and was a popular subject for artists--including Jacques-Louis David (François Gérard...
