Rare South German Pendulum Clock Signed "Joseph Graff" C1750
About the Item
Joseph Graff is considered to be one of the greatest European clock makers of the 18th C. Clocks of this type are very rare, especially with original, unaltered movements. Most of the surviving clocks were lost during the Second World War and the surviving examples are usually found in the US. German clocks were considered the finest pendulum clocks of the period, especially the elegant form of the pendulum clocks produced in Prague. Their movements and design were influenced by Paris, after the repeal of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, many of the great Protestant artisans emigrated from France and settled there.
A clock by the same maker with the same case and less complicated movement is illustrated in “Le Pendule Francaise, Clocks the World Over” by Tardy, Paris 1901, volume 4. That movement has world time dials rather than moon face.
