"Art Deco Clock in Chinese Manner", Gübelin Clock w/ Red Hardstone Finial

About the Item

Bold and elegant, this rare -- possibly unique -- Art Deco table clock in the Chinese manner by the renowned Gübelin firm in Switzerland is a close cousin to the impossibly rarified clocks produced by Cartier in the same period. Like Cartier, Gübelin combined carved stone -- in this case, heavily veined green marble and jet-black black marble -- semiprecious hardstone and enamelwork to create something elegant and sophisticated. The stone frames the clock face which features a beveled bezel and flinqué enamel, i.e., enamel applied over engine-turned engraving, something pioneered by Fabergé decades before. The clock is surmounted by a baby dragon carved from hardstone in a lovely orange-red color. The clock face is marked with the Gübelin name, as is the brass cap on the reverse.
