About the Item

English Library Clock by James McCabe,London, circa 1825. This highly collectible piece by McCabe comes in a rosewood case. The silvered dial with elegant roman numerals and James McCabe's signature and place of business, Royal Exchange, London. The dial and also the back plate are both stamped with the number 2037, a confirmation that both are original. This single fusee library clock also has bevelled glass to the sides and top enabling you to view the movement. Single fusee meaning it will not strike - an obvious advantage for a library clock. James McCabe was born in Lurgan, Co.Armagh, Ireland in 1748. He moved to London in 1775 and opened a business in Fleet St., later on opening the House of McCabe at 97 Cornhill, Royal Exchange, London. James was made an Honorary Freeman (allowing him to trade in London in his own right) of the Clockmakers Company. He was so respected by his peers that he was eventually made Warden of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers. After his death in 1811, the business passed to his sons and eventually closed in 1879. The House of McCabe enjoyed phenomenal success and were renowned for their range of high quality designs and craftsmanship. They were indeed considered the most illustrious watch and clockmaking company during this time. The clientele included royalty and aristocracy. You can join the list of notable owners of a McCabe piece, along with Lord Horatio Nelson and George Washington. We are delighted to have this clock in our stock as it is the first McCabe piece we have had in over 30 years. As with all of our clocks, this McCabe library clock is sold in full mechanically restored condition.
