The dome clock is among the most iconic designs of the early Patek Philippe solar timepieces. First conceptualized in 1956, the accompanying archival paperwork to this clock states that it was crafted in 1957, making this timepiece one of the earliest models of the firm's solar works. The name of legendary Swiss watchmaker Patek Philippe is synonymous with technical excellence, exclusive luxury and polished refinement. While the prestigious firm has been creating incomparable timepieces since its inception in 1839, the 1950s and 60s saw an exciting turn toward more creative designs and technological advancements. The firm developed state-of-the-art solar timepieces that harnessed the energy of the sun to power their movement. While the energy source was cutting-edge, all of the Patek Philippe solar desk time pieces from this era actually use a pocket watch mechanism for movement. Thus, this unique timepiece marries new technology with time honored 19th-century pocket watch techniques. This union of tradition and innovation is further reflected in the aesthetic design of the domed clock, which simultaneously evokes space-age curiosity while also referencing the architectural language of Baroque cathedrals and churches throughout Europe. The gilt brass case is designed so that the solar panel can be turned manually to face a light source, and the case of the present model has been intricately engraved with a refined diamond motif. Celebrated in the 1950s as “The Clock That is Wound By Light," Patek Philippe was awarded a Swiss patent for their solar clock technology, and today these early pieces are very rare and highly collectible. Marked: "Patek Philippe, Geneve" Crafted 1957 8 3/4" high x 5" wide x 5" deep.
