Rare c.1630 Augsburg Quarter-Striking Table Clock by Samuel Haug.

About the Item

Maker: Samuel Haug, Augsburg. Germany. Description: An early 17th century gilt-copper quarter-striking table clock with alarm and adjustable striking by Samuel Haug of Augsburg. Case: The elaborately engraved Augsburg style case has an ogee molded plinth, silvered winged animal feet, Doric columns to the corners, glazed windows to the sides and a tiered arcade above. The arcade houses the bells and is decorated on each level with rings of finials. It is surmounted by an onion formed cupola and obelisk finial. Dial: The main time dial has a silvered engraved 24-hour chapter ring dial with the first 12 hours indicated by Roman numerals around the outside edge and the second 12 hours indicated by Arabic numbers along the inside edge. The center carries the alarm disc and below is the silver engraved quarter indicating dial. To the side is the engraved ''12/6'' hour strike selection dial. At the back are the silvered engraved strike recording dials. They all have beautifully made blued steel hands. Movement: The decorative ormolu movement has a fusee on the time train with a verge and balance escapement and going barrels for the strike trains. It strikes the bells via torsioned hammers and has an alarm on/off at the front. At the side it is signed SA HA with Augsburg’s symbol the pinecone. Notes: The base most likely contained some form of mechanism at one time, but as is it is a beautiful functioning timepiece from the early 17th century. There is one finial missing from the center top just below the cupula. Ref: Sotheby’s, The Justice Warren Shepro Collection, 4.26.2001, Lot 34. Samual Haug was born circa 1580 and died 1637.
