English George III Mahogany and Brass Antique Traveling Desk Writing Slope Box

About the Item

A rare find in this condition and with this degree of originality throughout, this fine mahogany writing slope is austere and simple in form. Original heavy brass carrying handles flank the box, one acting also as the draw for a small drawer; this drawer is locked from within the box, opened by first unlocking and opening the writing box, then withdrawing a steel pin from the edge to release the small drawer. The interior is lined with an old green baize writing surface with a pair of glass inkwells and a pen well; the pen well is fitted with a bone handle, allowing it to be lifted and smalls to be stored below. The top of the baize slope folds back to reveal a paper storage compartment, the stringing forming a net within which to stuff keepsakes. A brass catch can be lifted from the side of the frame to hold the box in an opened position - this allows it to be turned around and used as a lectern, holding papers at a reading angle on the thin lectern shelf at the edge. Crafted during the last quarter of the 18th century, the box retains all original hardware and an old surface rubbed into a silky patina from centuries of waxing and gentle wear. These are convenient even today as a tidy means of handling bills and check writing, but an inordinately fine piece like this is an ideal acquisition for the more serious collector of fine English writing boxes and furnishings. Measurements: 19 3/4” W x 9 7/8” D x 6 3/8” H, 19 1/4” L when opened. Condition report: Original lock and key, these a bit sticky due to shrinkage of the box case. Lectern shelf is a replacement; this is easily removed and stored inside of the case. Green baize discolored and worn. Old scars and discolorations to the gorgeous old surface, this with a beautiful silky aged patina throughout.
