About the Item
This charming engraving is the work of Jacques Philippe, after the one by Nicolas Lancret. This work is the one that was used for the reception of LeBas at the academy. This engraving represents 3 couples in gallant love. A woman is feeding a rabbit (on the right). On the opposite side, a man is playing music, the guitar.
The paper has yellowed.
This scene is taken from a painting by Nicolas Lancret, an 18th century French painter. He brilliantly depicts the spirit of light comedy that characterized the taste and mores of French society during the Regency. He was trained in drawing and engraving. But he eventually abandoned engraving to devote himself to painting. He met Watteau and his work resembles that of Watteau. He entered the academy. He wanted to be a history painter but he painted a lot of gallant scenes and scenes of everyday life. He met the engraver Nicolas Larmessin who managed to understand his work and transcribed it perfectly. He becomes, in a way, the official engraver of the works of this artist.
This work is engraved by Jacques Philippe Lebas. This man is a French engraver of the XVIIIth century. He was approved by the French Academy. He obtained the authorization to officially reproduce the academician painters. He obtained this right thanks to the reproduction of 2 works of Nicolas Lancret representing the gallant conversations in the park. He is an associate member of the Academy of Rouen. He is also a consultant of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
