"Anemone" Grey and White Limestone Sculpture by Irish Artist Helen O'Connell

About the Item
"Anemone" is the name given to this remarkable sculpture from the Origami Works Series by Irish artist Helen O'Connell. Composed of Irish Kilkenny limestone, it shows the mastery of her chisel in the form of geometric decorative motifs using a sharp interplay of shadow and light with parallel fluting, textural variations and mark making. Evoking the asymmetry of "erratic geometry" it sometimes leads to more playful interpretations of geometry. These sculptures are part of a limited edition series of 10.
Helen O’Connell is an award-winning Irish sculptor with studios in Dublin and neighbouring County Wicklow, Ireland. Much of her work is in Irish Kilkenny limestone, a beautifully versatile material composed of marine life compressed over thousands of years, when the island of Ireland was still attached to mainland Europe. A native Dubliner, she graduated from Trinity College Dublin before surrendering to a fascination with sculpture. Determined to learn the ancient craft of stone carving, she spent several years studying in Ireland before attending the world famous Nicoli studios in Carrara, Italy where she immersed herself in the skills and expertise of generations of artisans. An increasing love of marble subsequently led her to the quarries of Alentejo in Portugal where the indigenous stone is renowned for its unique veining, coloration and particularities and these incredible pieces of layered history are carefully hand picked for specific works.
Much of O’Connell’s recent work explores the pure yet ceremonial qualities of the vessel and the unadorned magnificence of Kilkenny limestone is implicit in the light yet unyielding permanence of these forms. The artist is compelled by the energy this timeless material holds and the inspiration of sculptors such as Isamu Noguichi can be perceived in these minimal forms.
“Stone for me is a mythical, timeless and layered repository of past experience and I am so compelled by the energy it holds that I return time and again to this chosen medium. The veining in marble can signify a geological shift, a lingering echo of the monumental processes of earth and time that were involved in the formation of these stones. I discover fossils as I chip, tap and sculpt. Mother Nature continues to be my most admired sculptor and I strive to create something as beautiful and perfect as a pebble. Nothing is so aesthetically satisfying to me as a dry stone wall in the West of Ireland or as comforting to touch as a perfectly smooth pebble from a beach. I am inexplicably drawn to this medium”
O’Connell’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and art institutions throughout Ireland and Europe including the Royal Hibernia Academy and the galleries of the Craft Council of Ireland. Her work is featured in many private collections both in Ireland and abroad including that of Bono and Anne Madden. She is represented by Rhyme Studio in New York City.

Rhyme Studio
Rhyme Studio is a Brooklyn based design manufacturer, interiors and art advisory. On a mission to breathe unique form, color and sustainable craftsmanship into the world of rug design, we source Irish wool for our rug collection from Galway sheep farms. It is processed at a historic 300 year old woolen mill, hand dyed using natural dyes by a 200 year old mill before tufted by hand into carpet at our rural Irish farmhouse studio. The OM Series derives from a 1600 year old alphabet called Ogham and features the rich deep naturally brown wool of the Irish Zwartbles sheep. Known for monumental inscriptions on standing stones, it is believed that Ogham or the "tree alphabet" was created by druids and scholars as a secret form of communication. Other collections include Limited Edition The Insula Series inspired by 7th Century Irish art and illuminated manuscripts which was considered a golden age for the arts in Ireland. "The Trinity Series" is a study of triangular forms and rich colours and a fourth design series entitled "Modernity" will debut in early 2021. Founder Claire McGovern has designed interiors, curated art and design installations and collaborated with many talented artists and designers. Her entrepreneurial days began with a critically acclaimed art and design gallery evolving into the interiors and design practice she operates from New York City today. Her office is proud to also represent the works of storm chaser Ian Sheldon and sculptor Helen O'Connell.

- TangoBy Ryan SchmidtLocated in Los Angeles, CARyan T. Schmidt is inspired by everyday life. He loves to create and design, driven by the impact of making this imagination into a realized form. Various sketches of shapes and concepts in sweeping arcs consisting of curvilinear, sleek lines and elegant form are made visible with his passion for art. The sketches come to life in a three dimensional sculpture with Schmidt’s combined motivation to inspire the public, acquired skills, knowledge and experience accumulated since childhood. This 33 inch high by 12 inch wide by 12 inch deep polished stainless steel sculpture is mounted onto a black granite base and is ready to be displayed. Size includes base. The finish is mirror-polished to create brilliant and complex reflected images of organic transformation on the surface of this sculptural form. Observing this artwork prompts the viewer to ruminate on the contrasts and convergences between one's known reality and illusion. The sense of movement is an important aspect of this overall form. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable U.S. and worldwide shipping. A certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery is included with this unique artwork. Schmidt’s ambitious intentions are to create atmospheric, monumental sculpture with reflections of the sun or sky, movement of the clouds, and the ever-changing seasons; portrayed by the viewer for inspirational thoughts and healing. Schmidt’s creative interest started at the early age of five in Origami. Moving into painting and photography during school set a definite artistic direction. While, also learning to work with wood, metal and plastic in his father’s business of custom remodeling, landscaping, and handcrafted playgrounds. Transitioning into college, he furthered studies in photography, painting, drawing, color in design, printmaking, ceramics, and finally transitioned into sculpture. Schmidt began working in cast aluminum, later in bronze, and ultimately found the everlasting properties of stainless steel with its brilliant reflection. In 2002, he established Rykan Expedition, Inc. and started combining landscaping, water fountains and outdoor sculpture. Later, he moved to Los Angeles and spent 5 years to focus more on producing sculptures while establishing his gallery connections. Schmidt returned to his hometown in Bryant, Arkansas in 2015 to expand the production of sculptures. His mission is to share the gift of inspiration through reflection with the passion for stainless steel, and desire to build sculptures that will last generations. - Black Geometric Sculpture by Ursula Meyers Conceptual ArtistBy Ursula MeyerLocated in Stamford, CTBlack geometric sculpture by Ursula Meyers conceptual Artist. Ursula Meyer (1915-2003) American sculpture signed and dated. This monumental geometric form sculpture is one the first work of art ever offered for sale, only at Greenwich Living, by renowned artist Ursula Meyer. Provenance: From the Estate of Ann Pollon Re: The Collection of Ursula Meyer. Descendant. Acquired from the Artist Studio. Ursula Meyer was a German-born American sculptor, art-focused academician, and fine art critic, who proved an influential player in the transmission of and appreciation for European born Modernism to the United States in the post-World War II era. At first a ceramicist beholden to the teachings of 1930s Germany’s Bauhaus and Italy’s Futurists, she eventually became a creator and exponent of a crisp, geometry-focused sculptural lexicon in ceramics, and later wood and metal sculpture. Her legacy includes a decades-long exploration of Minimalism, as well as experimentations in creating and deciphering Conceptual and Expressive genres. Born in Hanover, Germany in 1915 to Ernst Josef Meyer and Elsa Katzenstein, Ursula Meyer is recorded as having “studied with former Bauhaus masters after the Bauhaus itself had closed under threat of National Socialism” in 1933. Spanning the years 1934 through 1937, Ursula’s Bauhaus tutorial is not fully documented, but it may well have included at least brief study with the French-born Marguerite Friedlaender Wildenhain (1896-1985), the first woman to earn the Master Potter certification in Germany, and who worked with Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Max Kehan and Gerhard Marcks (1889-1981). Meyer is recorded as having directly worked with Marcks, as well as with Otto Lindig...Category
