Bean by Soo Joo is a unique abstract table sculpture, created in porcelain ceramic and Korean celadon glaze. These biophilic ceramic sculptures by Soo Joo has a timeless beauty that is not affected by changing trends, and can be enjoyed for decades. The sculptures fit into any interior, with its natural ceramic material and its distilled form.
Soo Joo's work uses natural materials that have a long history with mankind, which makes them visually soothing and environmentally conscious. The artist creatively reimagines the essence of traditional Korean aesthetics into a modern context. Her intuitive eye for novel forms and her sensitivity to detail come from the artist’s background in fine art.
Developed while the artist was practicing ceramics in Korea, 'Bean' is inspired by perfectly-rounded river stones, smoothed by water erosion over many years. Similarly, 'Bean' is sanded and finely shaped by the artist for days to achieve a smooth appearance from all angles. Korean Porcelain and celadon glaze is used as the material for its timelessness and proximity to nature; Korean celadon was originally developed to replicate the slight blue tint of freshly fallen snow. 'Bean' is a slip-cast sculpture, hollow on the inside. As small but impactful table sculptures, they bring the peaceful essence of nature indoors. These sculptures can be purchased individually or as a pair.

Soo Joo Studio
Soo Joo is a Korean-American artist who works in Seoul, Korea and New York. Although she has a background in fine art, she studied Furniture Design at RISD. She develops novel biophilic design techniques and objects that bring the essence of nature indoors. "At the basic core of my work is an investigation into biophilic design: how non-living, abstract art and objects can still carry the essence of nature, through material and formal language. Through my work, I develop a new visual language that serves as an alternative to geometry, from an East Asian perspective."
