Organic Modern Mobius Sculpture in Sustainable River Rescued Ancient Wood

The Emerge side table is a modern organic form made from ancient matai trees (a native timber of New Zealand) that have fallen naturally into rivers and preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them. We rescue these trees from the river and continue their journey to become a cherished piece of functional art. This sustainable timber, naturally felled by nature, has been carbon dated at over 1500 years old. A sculptural shape made from individual pieces of matai wood formed together to make a patch work grain pattern. The wood is finished with a hand rubbed, low V.O.C., natural plant oils to bring the stunning grain to life. Diameter 13.75” x H 15.75” Diameter 350mm x H 400mm Handmade in Christchurch, New Zealand. Awa Kōpaka means glacier in te reo Māori. The Awa Kōpaka credenza was inspired by our observations of the organic forms of the glaciers on the West Coast of New Zealand. The credenza was designed by Richard Simpson during a three-day road trip down the West Coast, as we explored the Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers. Standing at the face of the glaciers we could see this enormous fissure of ice and we could hear it cracking & moving. You could see where it was carved out and the beautiful organic forms on the ice itself. Awa Kōpaka is expressing that form into a functional cabinet. It is a narrative about the movement of ice and how it continues to shape the landscape of New Zealand.
