About the Item

A Fine hand-carved and Lacquered wood figure of a Luohan Arhat, Buddha' disciple. Seated in royal ease on a standing lion, wearing long flowing robes. China, Kangxi Kingdom 1661-1722. The carved and painted seated holy man with shaved head perched on a thin organic base, his face carved in a respectful naturalistic joyful expression, wearing monastic draped robe, all-over showing scattered remnants of gilding over brown lacquer. Dimensions: 17.71 inches high History: Arhats or Luohans in China were Buddha disciple and enlightened and saintly men. They are Buddhist disciples. They have been depicted in Chinese Buddhist art since the fifth century and images in groupings of 16 or 18 abound since the tenth century. The 16 Luohans primarily derive from pre-Tang (618-907 CE) and Tang dynasty Buddhist texts. This Luohan is unusual in that he lovingly holds a charming canine in his lap. He was likely one of 16 different Luohans created for a Buddhist temple and his naturalistic style likely originates from Northern China.
