20th Century Austrian Bronze standing English Bulldog, Franz Bergman (Mangreb)

About the Item

This 20th Century Austrian Vienna Bronze depicts a standing English Bulldog, attributed to Franz Bergman (Mangreb). Crafted with exquisite detail, the piece showcases a warm dark brown patina, characteristic of Bergman's work. Signed by Bergman and bearing a foundry stamp "J.B. Deposee Registered Paris Bronze" underneath, this bronze exemplifies the craftsmanship of Franz Xaver Bergman, renowned for his Vienna Bronzes. Originating in the mid-19th century, Vienna Bronzes gained prominence with 40-50 producers, particularly in Vienna, during the early 1900s. Specializing in the cold painted technique, these bronzes were meticulously layered with "dust paints" directly over the bronze, resulting in lifelike details. Unlike traditional firing methods, cold painted pieces were colored during the cooling process. This bulldog sculpture sculpture remains in good condition and captures the essence of Bergman's style and craftsmanship. Measuring: 7cm in height 5cm in width 13cm in depth

PEPPERS AND MOTIVES Paprika, from the night damage family, a gift from the New to the Old World, a pleasant one like tomatoes and potatoes, like corn and beans, not a dangerous one like tobacco. You can no longer imagine our, especially the Mediterranean cuisine of the pre-Columbian period, both received such enrichment from America, potatoes, corn, beans as substances, tomatoes and peppers as spices and flavors, foreign, from far away , adding a new dimension to our dishes. The pepper has become the strongest source of vitamins in our latitudes, an indispensable medicine in our often denatured food. The varieties we grow belong to the species Capsicum annuum, the plant drawn by the painter is Capsicum sinense, of which two or three fruit shapes and different stages of ripeness were combined on one branch. The ripe fruit bodies are visible on the eye of the tongue: anyone who looks at them will taste the peppery spiciness after a while. The leaf is a triangle, it thins from the lower broad solidity of the capsule area up to the lightness of the buds and flowers. Diversity also in the fact that the fruits are of different lengths, different colors, harmony between the dark green and red shapes, relief-like articulation of the pod surfaces. Butterfly, chrysalis and caterpillar cannot be precisely defined; they are hawkmoths from a group that counts seventy species in tropical America. A close relative of the strong-snouted Cocytius antarus - the pupa's beak is also noticeable here. (Original plate no. 55) ____________________________________ Maria Sibylla...

  • Austrian Cold Painted Bronze Horse Franz Bergman (Att.)
    By Franz Xaver Bergman (Bergmann)
    Located in Newark, England
Big Brown Stallion upon a onyx plinth From our Sculpture collection, we are delighted to offer this Austrian Cold Painted Bronze Horse. The Bronze mounted upon a squared green onyx base with a convex beading border. The horse beautifully cast with naturalistic features modelled as a big brown stallion inclusive of its brown to black hue. The horse stamped to the belly Geschutzt with the registration mark 2740. We firmly attribute the Austrian Bronze to Franz Bergman and date it to the late 19th century circa 1890. Franz Xavier Bergman (1861-1936) was the owner of a Viennese foundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronzes with a range of subjects such as oriental, erotic, and animal figures. He was probably the most famous Austrian bronze foundry who is widely recognised for smaller cold painted bronzes with an extremely good attention to detail. Signed often with a ‘B’ or Bergman and a registration mark. Geschutzt often stamped or printed it is pronounced “guess-shutst.” It is an abbreviation of the term gesetzlich geschutt which is a German phrase that translates as legally protected or in other words copywriter. It bares is a similar meaning to the English word Patented or French Depose...
