Balloon Dog 'Red' by Jeff Koons

About

This iconic ceramic design by American artist Jeff Koons is number 445 of a limited edition of 2300, and originally from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, California. The plate measures 10 ¼ in – 26.7 cm in diameter and 4 ½ in – 11.5 cm in height. The piece is a cast porcelain sculpture coated with a reflective glaze, and is stamped on the back with the artist’s signature and hand numbered. It is part of the first edition of the limited run, but it does have several very minor flaws which have been photographed, and which do not detract from the beauty of the piece. It also does not have the box, stand or dust bag that was originally with the plate. We can provide additional images on request. Koons studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. While a visiting student at the Art Institute, Koons met the artist Ed Paschke, who became a major influence and for whom he worked as a studio assistant in the late 1970s. He rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as part of a generation of artists who explored the meaning of art in a media-saturated era. Focusing on banal objects as models, he questioned standards of normative values in art, and, instead, embraced the vulnerabilities of aesthetic hierarchies and taste systems.
