About the Item
"Jealously" is a porcelain figurine from Hutschenreuther of a nude woman and two fighting bears. Sculpted in exquisite detail by Karl Tutter whose name appears on the surface base.
"Tutter received his artistic training in Austria where he studied eight semesters at an art school. He competed his one and a half year private studies in drawing and painting with Josef Mayr. During World War I, Tutter was held prisoner of war for six years, which he spent in Khabarovsk, East Siberia. After the war he studied sculpture in the State Museum of Regional Studies under the direction of the explorer Vladimir Klavdijewitsch Arsenjew. He then worked as a modeler at the royally privileged Tettau porcelain factory. He also worked for the Sitzendorfer Porzellanmanufaktur.
In 1922 he was employed as a modeler at the Lorenz Hutschenreuther porcelain factory Together with Carl Werner, he soon held the artistic direction of the art department there; with which both made a significant contribution to the success of the manufactory. In 1941, 1942 and 1944 he was represented with a total of 18 works at the Great German Art Exhibition in Munich.
Until 1956 Tutter created a varied ceramic work there. Tutter mastered the language of design. With great imagination he created expressive and salable sculptures. The palette of his designs ranged from pompous, lovely cherub candlesticks to strictly stylized figures in the Art Deco style. He participated at other exhibitions in Prague, Regensburg, Bayreuth, Kulbach and elsewhere. In 1941 he received the honorary prize for sculpture in Bayreuth". - Information from German Wikipedia
Hutschenreuther porcelain is famous all over the world. Founded in 1814 by the family patriarch, Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther, Hutschenreuther porcelain has remained within the family for nearly two hundred years. He employed artists, craftsmen, and sculptors from all over continental Europe. Hutschenreuther focused on quality and design. Lorenz Hutschenreuther, Carolus’ son, opened in 1857 another porcelain factory in the Bavarian town of Selb. The Selb factory was so well managed that it was able to compete with famous British porcelain brands. These two companies would eventually merge back into each other in the 20th century.
Hutschenreuther is the name of a German family that established the production of porcelain in northern Bavaria, starting in 1814. The Hutschenreuther porcelain business was founded in 1814 by Carol’s Magnus Hutschenreuther (1794-1845) in Hohenberg an Der Eger, Bavaria, Germany. He had previously worked at the Wallendorf porcelain manufactory in Lichte (Wallendorf.)
After his death in 1845, the factory was headed by his widow, Johanna Hutschenreuther, and her two sons. A large part of the factory was destroyed by a firedestroyed by a fire in 1848, but it was rebuilt. From 1860, they produced hand-painted and gilded porcelain products.
In 1857, Lorenz Hutschenreuther, the elder son of Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther, established a porcelain factory in Self. They expanded from 1902 to 1969 and were named Porzellanfabriken Lorenz Hutschenreuthre AG Selb (Lorenz Hutschenreuther Porcelain Factories Company, Selb.)
