About the Item

This well executed carving is unsigned by the artist, but presumed to have been done in Eastern Europe in circa 1940 in the Black Forest style. The carving depicts a military soldier holding a 'Tommy' gun and standing next to his horse making some notations under the shade of a stylized tree. The carving is quite well executed depicting the soldier's face and clothing in considerable detail, as is the study of the horse. The leaves and branches of the tree also display the mastery of this medium by the artist using this single piece to wood to sculpt the intricate details of the foliage. There are two labels on the bottom of the base which we were unable to read with any certainty.
